How to write a 5 paragraph essay and structure it right
(Or 5 points to write a correctly structured 5 paragraph essay).
Number 1
- Read the question carefully.
- Read the question again.
- Analyze the question. Make sure that you know exactly what you are being asked to do.
- Read the questions again and while you are doing this you can start jotting down a few notes.
Number 2
- Think about what exactly you are being asked to write about. Essentially in essay you are being asked to write about your ideas about your learning, and what you have understood through that learning.
- Organize your notes so you can put them in order of what you have learned and what you have understood through the process of learning.
- At this point also think about what further learning you would like to pursue based on what you already know.
Number 3
- Now, we are ready to start organizing the paragraphs.
- The 1st paragraph will be the Introduction. The last or 5th paragraph will be the conclusion.
- Now this is where you have to balance the topic of the essay. The 2nd paragraph will contain all the information that supports the subject of your learning/concept. The 3rd paragraph will contain all the information that opposes the subject of your learning/concept. The 4th paragraph will contain information that you feel that you need to know about; additional information that you feel the reader needs to know about concerning the subject or concept.
Number 4
- Now, we are ready to start thinking about the structure of each paragraph.
- Let’s deal first with paragraphs 2 & 3. This is all about balance. So if you find 3 aspects about the subject/learning that you feel support the ideas, you then need to find 3 aspects that oppose the ideas. Keep a good balance throughout.
- In keeping with the balance can you give the same treatment to paragraph 4? (This is the paragraph that is all about future learning and additional information).
Number 5
- You have the main body of your essay (paragraphs 2, 3 & 4). Start reviewing your introductory paragraph. Does it flow? Does it illustrate to the reader the contents of the essay?
- Reread, paragraphs 2, 3 & 4. Does the work still flow? Is it balanced?
- Concentrate on paragraph 5. Again is the paragraph balanced? Does the content flow? Reread your work again and make any alterations.
